    Sedgwick County Extension Arboretum

    Extension Arboretum

Planting began in 1994 on the grounds of the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center at 21st and Ridge in Northwest Wichita.  Our grounds are enthusiastically planted and maintained by our Extension Master Gardeners.  Included in the arboretum is a tree collection of almost 300 labeled trees, raised bed demonstration garden of vegetables and flowers, container gardens, rose gardens, nature trail, cacti collection, viburnum collection and ornamental grasses.  All plants are labeled for your enjoyment and learning.

Arboretum tours are available for groups of 5 or more by contacting 316-660-0140.

    Xeriscape Methods

Our main focus is trees and we use xeriscape principles in selection and planting where possible.  Surrounding the Extension Education Center is a small strip of turf type tall fescue along with trees and is watered regularly like a traditional Sedgwick County Lawn, with a little more than one inch of water per week.

Between the parking lot and the street the arboretum is planted to drought tolerant trees and a buffalograss lawn.  Most trees have drip irrigation installed at a distance of about 3-4' from the trunk.  This is used once per week once it is so dry that the buffalograss is browning from drought and then not watered when the buffalograss greens up following rains.  This follows the principles of WaterWise landscapes.
