    What is it?

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a new, national, multi-species youth livestock quality assurance program that covers food safety, animal well-being, and character development through age-appropriate educational curriculum

    Who Needs to get certified?

    County Level
Beginning in the 2018-2019 4-H year all beef cattle (including bucket calf), dairy cattle, dairy goat, meat goat, sheep and swine project member must be YQCA (Youth for the Quality Care of Animals) certified by May 1 of the current year in order to exhibit at County Fair.

    State Level
Any youth 8 years of age and older who will be exhibiting a market or breeding animal in the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive or Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) is required to obtain certification. Exhibitors who will be participating as a 7-year old will be exempt for this year. YQCA certification number will be submitted through the nomination process for market animals, and at the time of entry for exhibitors who only have registered purebred breeding animals. All youth should complete the training by June 15, 2020.

    How Do You Get Certified?

Youth may earn their certification in one of the following ways:

    • Instructor-led training ($3/child)
    • Online course ($12/child)
    • Valid Youth PQA + number in lieu of YQCA (current numbers will be honored until they expire)

Instructor-led session may be offered at the local level by certified instructors. Trainings will also be provided at the junior swine and met goat producer days and 4-H Discovery Days. Visit www.yqca.org for more details and to register for a class. All youth must pre-register through the YQCA website and pay the appropriate fee regardless of the type of training they select in order to obtain a certification number. Families should use their 4-HOnline credentials to go in, create a user account, and register for training.
